Home made detergent

My wonderful friend Marci Schaffer graciously jumped at the opportunity to share her recipe for "homemade laundry detergent". She has been using this recipe since December and naturally it has saved her a lot of money. I hope that this can be of help to you also.

Powder Laundry Detergent
10 oz. grated bar soap [Fels-Naptha, Kirk's Castile, Zote, homemade soap works great too, avoid the standard perfumed bath soaps]
2 cups Borax
2 cups Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
Optional for hard water dingy clothes: Add 1 cup Baking Soda and reduce grated soap by 4 oz. [This is also great to add if you have heavily soiled/stinky clothes regularly.
I grate my soap using next to smallest on 4 sided cheap metal grater. Add all ingredients to an airtight container for storage and shake, shake, shake to mix well.
Add 1 Tbsp. per load for regular clothes.
Add 1-1/2 Tbsp. per load for heavily soiled clothes.
This is completely safe for front load washing machines. I have used it in mine for almost 9 months. It does not have much sudsing. If you do not see suds it does not mean you need to add more. Sudsing is not needed for cleaning of clothes when you have the proper ingredients. Sudsing in regular laundry detergents is caused by fillers that are added for that purpose. This is also safe for baby clothing and will not cause irritation. If you have an allergy to soaps and/or detergents you may not want to use Fels-Naptha.
Thanks Marci for this post.
